March 15, 2016

We are coming up on a month of me being back. It feels weird writing back after 12 years of all my to and from. It is home. Yes – I have two homes, two communities,  all packed into one life. I couldn’t ask for more!

I hit the ground running, meeting in Moshi with the inspiring Krupa from Anza, an organization focused on starting and scaling social businesses in Tanzania.  Thanks to her KiliHub, I also had the chance to sit and learn more about Silverleaf Academies from the founder, Dr. Gordon Carver. Silverleaf is a chain of affordable, high quality private schools that are about to hit Tanzania. Clearly with our continued desire to grow our network of schools and assist in training teachers and administers, we were keen.

It was then onto meeting with architects, project managers, and builders for a new project we have brewing here in Tanzania. Stay tuned for a smidge longer to hear about that one.

No trip would be complete here without some stateside visitors! We welcomed the Broyhills and Laine Boswell to Tanzania.  I was able to take them along with me for home visits and site visits to gauge the impact of our Teachers Training work, Full Circle PSD Curriculum as well as the Happy and Sad Boxes that are promoting and advocating on behalf of children’s rights here.

Knowing our beneficiaries and seeing our work in practice makes all the difference in the world.

It was inspiring to say the least…the boxes were full, the teachers engaged, and the new parents were welcoming and eager their children had received a scholarship from TFFT!

February ended with Kilimanjaro Marathon festivities. The entire team, a couple of our scholars, AND Laine either ran the half marathon or the 5km. It was a sweltering day, but always fun, yes fun, getting ourselves out of that comfort zone, challenging ourselves and our bodies to do what we thought might not have been possible before! I do thrive off that a bit.

Speaking of which,  7 of our Scholars received their Form 4 National Exam results this past month, and passed with flying colors! This is a huge step for any youth in Tanzania. Of Tanzania’s 4.8 million primary students, less than 30% continue onto Secondary School, and now 7 more of our scholars have graduated from Secondary School. This puts them at such an advantage, it’s exciting to see what is next for them. That’s what this month is about – mapping out with each one of them what their last two years of TFFT sponsored education support looks like! It has been a treat to have them in our office strategizing with us all.  These kids give me pride, they show me hope in action.

TFFT envisions a world in which all children contribute to society as active and empowered citizens, free of exclusion, disadvantage, and vulnerability. We believe that offering opportunity to the future generation gives hope for a better tomorrow for us all.  Thanks for being a part of this family and sharing in this journey with us all.
