Hey it’s Katy, and I am one of the interns this summer in Tanzania. I am also Chloe’s little sister. I have been interning for the past month and I am finishing my internship this week. I graduated from high school in Oklahoma this May and I am starting at Texas A&M this August. After college, I plan on starting a fair-trade company in eastern Africa. This internship has been able to teach me a lot about running an organization, especially working internationally and having offices half a world apart.
This past weekend Full Circle organized a Sports Day for over 30 TFFT scholars at USA River Academy! The students were all ages, and it was great to see them all working together. The event was hosted by John Corse at his home between Arusha and the school. It is a lovely house with a big yard, and a great place for the students to spend the day.
The students started the day with an obstacle course and some teamwork games. All of the kids loved participating and cheering each other on! The day continued with art projects as the students painted on large posters. I was so excited to see the creative ideas and patterns that the students came up with for their paintings.
Thanks to John, the students had the opportunity to learn about trees and plant some seeds that will grow into beautiful trees at the school! The kids loved learning about different types of trees and getting to plant the seeds. They were able to end their exciting day with a scavenger hunt through the yard, gardens, and orchard. The students were treated to a lovely lunch and wonderful snacks throughout the day. The day was packed full of activities, games, and yummy food, which kept all the students busy!
Even though the older students were there just to attend, they were always helping and leading the younger students. It’s so wonderful that the younger students have mentors to look up to at their own school! I’m excited to see what these students can accomplish later in life. I’ve helped lead many events like these in the U.S., but I’ve never had so many youth eager to help in any way that they could. I’m so humbled by these students and their loving personalities.
Since only half of the students attended this sports day, the rest of the students with attend another sports day during their next term! I’m so sad that I won’t be able to attend the next one, but I can’t wait to hear about how it goes!
