To our global community,

On March 16th, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Arusha, Tanzania, the town in which TFFT scholars, teachers, and community members live, learn, and teach. Schools closed on March 17th and all scholars returned to the homes of their parents or guardians. After a three-month closure, schools in Tanzania reopened and the scholars excitedly resumed their studies on June 29th. In order to make up for time lost in the classroom, the school days have been extended by two hours, with the term ending on December 18th.

During school closures, the TFFT team visited scholars’ households, assessed needs, and delivered Emergency Relief Packets, which included critical resources. To ensure the continuity of learning, we worked with schools to provide scholars with immediate access to learning materials and support, as well as guidance for parents and guardians. The team distributed educational materials about the disease and precautionary measures to scholars and families.

We are extremely thankful to our staff in Tanzania for courageously working on the front-lines, supporting the most vulnerable communities in order to ensure the health and safety of our scholars. Over the coming weeks and months, our Scholarship Program team will offer tutoring support to students who may have fallen behind to make up for any disproportionate learning losses. Our team will diligently access each scholar’s academic progress at every step as we work towards recovery. The Psychosocial and Health Program will address the scholars’ well-being in counseling sessions to help them cope with the challenges of this time.

We will continue to update the TFFT family about ongoing recovery efforts. For the most up to date information, follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Your dedicated support ensures consistent quality learning, life skills support, and access to health and psychosocial care so the TFFT scholars can continue to reach their full potential and thrive in their communities!
